What Safari Travellers Need to Know

Planning a safari in Kenya? Before you set off to explore the Maasai Mara, watch elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, or discover the country’s beautiful lakes and conservancies, there is an important travel requirement to add to your preparations.

As of 6 October 2026, Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) application process has begun incorporating a mandatory inbound travel health insurance requirement for affected international visitors. The change means travellers should check their insurance arrangements before completing their travel authorisation application.

At Kipruto Safaris, we want your journey to begin with confidence. Here is what you need to know before travelling to Kenya.

Is Travel Health Insurance Mandatory for Kenya?

Kenya’s mandatory inbound travel health insurance requirement is based on the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023, and associated regulations. The government has been implementing the requirement for non-Kenyan visitors entering the country for stays of less than 12 months.

The eTA portal began incorporating an insurance step on 6 October 2026. Travellers should therefore verify the current requirements for their nationality and travel circumstances before departure.

The government has also published minimum benefit requirements for the cover, including medical expenses and emergency medical transportation.

How Much Does Kenya’s Mandatory Travel Insurance Cost?

Recent travel-industry guidance puts the insurance premium at approximately US$44 per traveller. Additional online processing or convenience charges may apply, so check the final amount before making payment.

For couples, families and groups travelling together, remember to account for the insurance cost for each eligible traveller when preparing your travel budget.

Check the current application process through the official Kenya eTA website.

Can I Use My Existing Travel Insurance?

This is an important question for travellers who have already purchased comprehensive insurance in their home country.

Kenya’s Ministry of Health previously clarified that qualifying overseas insurance could meet the requirement if it satisfied the prescribed coverage conditions. However, travellers have reported differences in how existing policies are recognised during the eTA application process.

Before assuming your current policy is sufficient, check the latest instructions on the official portal and confirm that your cover meets the applicable requirements.

We recommend keeping your existing travel insurance even if you purchase the mandatory inbound cover. Your wider policy may provide additional protection for trip cancellation, lost luggage, travel delays and other unexpected circumstances, subject to its terms.

What If I Already Have an Approved Kenya eTA?

If your eTA was approved before the new insurance step was introduced, do not assume that you must submit a new application.

At the same time, do not assume that your existing approval automatically resolves every insurance requirement. Guidance for travellers with previously approved eTAs has been evolving, so confirm the current position through the official Kenyan authorities before travelling.

Keep your eTA approval and any insurance confirmation or policy documents accessible throughout your journey.

How to Prepare for Your Kenya Safari

A little preparation makes the arrival process much easier. Before travelling, we recommend that you:

  1. Check your passport validity and entry requirements.
  2. Apply for your Kenya eTA through the official government website, where applicable.
  3. Confirm whether you need to purchase the mandatory inbound travel health insurance.
  4. Check the final insurance cost and the policy’s validity dates.
  5. Retain your insurance confirmation and eTA approval.
  6. Keep your comprehensive travel insurance in place.
  7. Carry copies of your travel documents and accommodation confirmations.

Apply for your eTA well ahead of departure, allowing sufficient time for processing and any additional checks.

Travelling to Kenya and Tanzania?

If your African adventure includes both Kenya and Tanzania, check the entry and insurance requirements for each country separately. Requirements may differ, and you should not assume that a policy issued for one country automatically satisfies the requirements of the other.

Your safari itinerary, border crossings and travel dates should all be considered when preparing your documents.
